Ponesse Foods

At Biaggio Ristorante, like chefs in many other downtown restaurants, "Hey Mario" was the way I started my day. First thing in the kitchen every morning, I did a fruit and vegetable order for Ponesse. Mario who had been up and at the food terminal by 4 o'clock in the morning had the order filled and in the restaurant within the hour. With their father Rocco, Mike and Mario run the biggest and best fruit and vegetable operation at the St. Lawrence Market.

Just inside the east entrance of the market (off Front St.) you will find one of the cities biggest and best selections of seasonal fruit and vegetables in Toronto. Being a major supplier to the restaurant trade you will find the prices and quality are second to none. If you don't see what you want, don't be afraid to ask. There is a good chance that Mario or Mike have put aside a case of the best arugula or the finest herbs for their regular customers and would be more than happy to share with you. It's a good idea to shop early as the selection dwindles as you get near the end the day.

Deborah loves to visit early Saturday afternoon to see what Mario's got just a little too much of. We buy by the case at the peak of the season for preserving or drying, tomato sauce, pickled cucumbers, mango chutney, dried tomatoes, pickled onions and beets, whatever is fresh, so we can enjoy it all throughout the rest of the year. Drop by for a healthy lunch at their fresh fruit salad bar and tell Mario that Timothy and Deborah said to say hello..
