RIPA DELLA MORE 2000 Castello Vicchiomaggio

Last summer during our Northern Italian Food & Wine Tour we spent a day at the Castello Vicchiomaggio. We enjoyed a half day cooking class, a leisurely lunch and a tour of the cellars and production facilities. Our host and the proprietor of Castello Vicchiomaggio John Matta and his wife introduced us to 6 of the wines produced on the estate. Upon our return to Canada we were pleasantly surprised to find 2 of the wines are on the vintages list at the LCBO.

Ripa delle More means 'hill of the blackberries'. The wine is 100% Sangiovese, now perfectly legal under Chianti Classico rules, but because the use of French barriques is disallowed under Tuscan rules, Vicchiomaggio had to designate this wine as IGT (Indicazione geografica tipica) 'typical of the geographical region'.

VINTAGES: Tasting Note: Our panel's tasting note: Medium to deep ruby colour with aromas of licorice, earth tones, cassis, cherry, coffee and vanilla extract. Quite dry with enveloping, but not hard tannins. The fruit is pushing against the tannin, but it still needs at least four years. However, if you wish to try it now, an Osso Bucco would service it well. Lingering finish. (Jan. 2001)
